Empowering South Carolina Mayors to Shape Stronger Communities

The Riley Mayors’ Design Fellowship educates mayors and equips them with the tools to envision and implement projects that positively impact the built and natural environment, quality of life, community pride, and economic development in their cities and towns.

A Fellowship Built Around Real Projects

The Riley Mayors’ Design Fellowship, an initiative of the Joseph P. Riley Jr. Center for Livable Communities, equips local leaders with tools, resources, and expert guidance to strengthen their communities.

Each Fellow attends the program with a specific community project or challenge in mind – whether revitalizing a downtown corridor, improving public spaces, enhancing mobility, or advancing economic development.

During the Fellowship, mayors present their projects to a multidisciplinary team of experts and peers, receive practical feedback and technical guidance, and explore design-based solutions that can be implemented in their communities.

Fellows return home with new ideas, actionable strategies, and a statewide network of leaders committed to creating vibrant, resilient places for future generations.

“The decisions on matters of design of and in our towns and cities often have lasting impacts. If the decisions are well thought out and wise, present and future generations of citizens will benefit, with their quality of life enhanced.”
